Buy-to-let remortgaging activity soared by nearly two-thirds in February as landlords took advantage of falling rates.

Investors agreed more than 13,000 remortgage deals during the month – 62% more than in February last year, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).

In fact, remortgaging has been the main driver of increased activity in the buy-to-let sector in recent months, accounting for 59% of total advances in February, compared with just 27% in the homeowner space.

A total of £1.5bn was also advanced to landlords buying properties in February, a massive 67% more than in the same month of last year.

A DEVELOPER has confirmed it is working on an application to build hundreds of more homes on the edge of Mickleover.

Commercial Estates Group has already got planning permission to build 300 homes on part of a piece of land known as New House Farm, on the edge of the suburb, But its website said the land as a whole is “promoted for a 1,500-unit sustainable, urban extension to Mickleover”.

CEG had previously said the location of the site “makes for a very sustainable location being in close proximity to many local services and good transport links”.

DERBY is to get its own version of popular board game Monopoly after coming out on top in a public vote.

The city beat off competition from Leicester, Grantham and Newark to win the right to have a regional version of the game.

The vote was organised by Winning Moves UK, which is putting together the game under licence from Monopoly owner Hasbro.

Now Derby will feature in its own version of Monopoly, with London landmarks and streets from the original replaced by local ones.

Mortgage lending rose at its fastest pace for nearly eight years in January as investors rushed to beat the Government’s Stamp Duty hike.

Total lending hit £13.6bn during the month – that’s 38% more than in January 2015 AND the highest monthly increase since July 2008, according to the British Bankers’ Association (BBA).

Lending levels look set to remain strong going forward, with approvals for house purchase rising 27% year-on-year. Meanwhile, loans in the pipeline for remortgaging and buy-to-let soared by 42% and 43% respectively.

MORE than 300 new homes are to be built in Littleover by housebuilder Barratt Homes, creating hundreds of jobs for local people.

The 334 new homes are planned for the new development, Highfields, where homes have recently been released for sale. The expansion plans follow a strong recovery in the property market, propelled by the successful Help to Buy scheme and recently launched Help to Buy ISA, aimed at aiding first-time buyers onto the housing ladder.

Rightmove has announced a string of new records for the site, with visits in January up 21 million on the same period last year, and enquiries to agents and developers hitting a new record of over 4.9 million.

There were over 127 million visits last month, up almost 20% compared to January 2015, and surpassing the previous record of 118 million set last August.

More than half (55%) of new buy-to-let mortgage applicants are unaware of the mortgage tax relief changes about to come in, new research by Direct Line for Business reveals.

The survey, conducted among mortgage brokers across the UK, reveals that nearly two-thirds (62%) of buy-to-let mortgage applicants were unaware of either the changes to mortgage tax relief or the EU’s Mortgage Credit Directive (MCD). Both mean changes which could impact their ability to secure a mortgage.
